Pause before paying

Understand the debt, then choose a response.

A collection notice can feel urgent, but verify the collector, amount, ownership, and dates before sharing information or agreeing to payment.

When contacted

  1. Confirm who is contacting you. Independently verify the company and callback information.
  2. Ask for written details. Review the creditor, amount, and your rights.
  3. Do not provide unnecessary sensitive information. A legitimate collector should not need passwords or gift-card payment.
  4. Choose a realistic plan. Do not agree to an amount that prevents rent, food, medication, utilities, or transportation.
Common scam signs

Threats of immediate arrest, demands for gift cards or cryptocurrency, refusal to provide written information, or pressure to act before you can verify the debt.

Snowball versus avalanche

Snowball: extra money goes to the smallest balance first. Avalanche: extra money goes to the highest interest rate first. Both require minimum payments on other debts.
